When we first begin to practice yoga on a daily basis, subconscious resistance and aversion to structure can arise. Indeed at the edge of our greatest change, we often find our greatest resistance. Making our way through this resistance is an important “rite of passage” for the development of a strong sense of resolve. As we engage in a deep yoga practice, we need an increasingly stronger will in order to strengthen our emotional and physical container so it can hold the power we are activating. The support of a strong program structure acts as scaffolding to help practitioners move through their resistance instead of running from it. For this reason, it is our experience that a firm requirement for class attendance, participation, and punctuality is essential. You will be required to attend all classes, to arrive at least five minutes early and to stay for the full duration of the class. You will also be asked to complete all assignments on time without exception. At first glance, such structure can seem rigid but it is designed to serve as a support in your work to surmount the natural resistances that arise. Ultimately it will offer you a greater level of freedom as you develop your own will. If we look at will as the root of self-esteem and self-esteem as the foundation of personal power, personal power can then become the doorway to freedom of expression and fulfillment. Managing our personal process in the face of life’s requirements and deadlines is one of the disciplines of a modern-day yogi, and the benefits you gain from this practice will carry over into your personal and professional life.
